I have a list of books about homeschoolers and homeschool authors to share with you. My goal is two-fold; support authors who were themselves homeschooled (nonfiction/fiction) and, bring you books that feature homeschoolers (fiction). Choosing books featuring homeschoolers as the main characters and using the free PDF printable (found at the end of this article) will make reading fun for your children again!
This article is made possible by these sponsors and authors. Please visit their websites to learn more about their books and resources. I appreciate them coming alongside me to support books about homeschoolers and homeschool authors!

Wholesome and horsey, the Sonrise Stable main characters are homeschooled children who get along with their siblings, respect their parents, and love God. Obedient but not perfect, there’s plenty of adventure, humor, and opportunities for lessons to be learned. Learn more and purchase HERE.

This “first devotions” will introduce beginning readers to the habit of independent devotions. With 15 attributes of God, the brief, simple text, verses, and daily hymns are the first step in a lifelong journey with God’s Word for your child! Learn more and purchase HERE.
I thought it would be hard to find books with homeschooled characters, but once I decided to specifically curate a list for you, I discovered there are many more than I had imagined! As homeschoolers, we love learning about all kinds of people and cultures, but sometimes it is nice to read about families that live similarly to you.
However, one thing I found while reading these books about homeschoolers is how diverse homeschool families are! There are no cookie-cutter scenarios where all homeschoolers live the same – we all embrace home education differently – and that is awesome!
Books About Homeschoolers
Picture books written by current homeschool moms and/or homeschool graduates that are also about homeschoolers.
Sunshine & Blue: A Book About Special Children by Clarissa R. West. This is the first children’s book I have written, illustrated, and published! It introduces my two disabled and terminally ill children, Abigail and Jubal. This book is perfect for families with special children or those who want to help their children understand and accept children with disabilities. A very realistic and down-to-earth story.
- My children are homeschooled and that is mentioned in the story.
- It features photos of my children, digitally edited to look like beautiful paintings.
- The Holy Scriptures are presented throughout the book.
Miss Teacher Mom series by Katlynne Mirabal. These children’s picture books are a fun peek into a family’s homeschool life.
I’m a Homeschool Kid by Eileen Lord. A cute picture book that shows all of the ways a homeschooled family lives and learns together.
Mama, why am I homeschooled? by Jacy Ruwe. A sweet book explaining all of the wonderful reasons why a family may choose to homeschool.
This is my Home, This is my School by Jonathan Bean. The author writes and illustrates this book based on his own childhood.
Chapter Books for Elementary+
Sonrise Stable Horse Book Series by Vicki Watson. I was first drawn to this 10-book series because my girls (11 and 14) love horses and my husband hopes to have horses one day. Then I read on Vicki’s website that these books are Christian, homeschooling, and conservative-friendly stories so I knew these would be amazing books to add to our home library! These are wholesome stories that encourage godly character and biblical values. I highly recommend them to girls (8+) who like horses, but even my boys have been enjoying them. My 14-year-old daughter said she really appreciates the lack-of romance in this series since the addition-of romance in other books always bothers her. She also said, “These are the perfect books for our family because the characters are so much like us!”. I agree – the conversational writing style makes the story realistic. 🙂 BUY THE BOOKS HERE.
- Additional horse resources are available, from history books to art books – great for developing a complete homeschool unit study based on horses!
- The author also has a devotional featuring horses – great for teens.
- The author also homeschooled her children.
Creation Seekers series by William D. Burt. I met Mr. Burt at a local homeschool conference and he was a delight to speak with! He has two series, but only this one features homeschoolers. He sent us the 2-book set and we have thoroughly enjoyed reading them. They are creation science /sci-fi adventures that may be meant for boys, but my girls loved them, too. Even more exciting (for us) is that they are set in Oregon, so we are familiar with the locations he writes about. Even my eldest son (18) read these books and commented “This guy is a genius author!” – high praise from the one who says J.R.R. Tolkien is the best author ever!
- The children are in a public school at the beginning of the book, but become homeschoolers after a while.
- There is some mild romance mentioned in this series.
- The author also homeschooled his children.
The Sterling Spectacles series by Jason Balmet. The characters in this set of books are homeschooled. This series follows the adventures of a family traveling full-time in an RV to visit the National Parks. Mystery and adventure await them at every stop! These fictional books are educational and great for emerging readers and older children.
- The author is a homeschool graduate.
- The author is currently homeschooling his children (with his wife).
- Large family and Christian friendly.
Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham. I must include my all-time favorite read-aloud book featuring a “homeschooler”. However, Nathaniel Bowditch was a real person who lived in the early American years and, typical of the time, was actually (mostly) self-taught. Nowadays, people call it “unschooling” or something. It is an incredible example of embracing a lifestyle of learning. I love this book!
The Railway Children is a delightful book. It depicts rural life with a mystery. I was drawn in by the cottage life, writing mother, and home-educated children.
Homeschool Authors & Their Books
I am also excited to specifically support authors who were home-educated themselves! As a self-published author, I know how much time and effort is dedicated to writing a book. As Christian authors, we strive to write edifying content for the glory of God. I am happy to share the following Christian homeschool authors and their books with you.
A Light to My Path, my first by-myself devotion for young readers, Our Great God: 15 Attributes of God by Michelle Jansma with Keepsake Curriculum. Michelle was homeschooled and has gone on to work alongside her mother, Cindy, developing and writing books/curricula for Christian homeschoolers. I love that this book includes companion hymns for the child to learn with each devotion. Old-fashioned hymns are so important to our family and learning them is one of our favorite things. BUY THE BOOK HERE.
- This devotional is recommended for ages 5-8.
- I know that my children (of older ages) and I would benefit from this lovely book.
The Story of the 100 Years War by Christine Zell. This children’s picture book was written by a homeschool mom and illustrated by her son. It is a great living history book to use when teaching that time period. It is written in rhyme and the artwork is based on real Medieval pieces of art.
- Includes a glossary of vocabulary words.
- Includes the original artwork to be used as an art study.
The Pure Line series by Alyson Jensen. Alyson is a homeschool graduate who gifted me the first book – Chained – in her series and I read it out loud to my children, including my 18-year-old son. We all enjoyed the adventures of Adrian Falkner and his friends. It has enough mystery and action for my boys and a good storyline for my girls (they are aspiring writers who have an eye/ear for good writing). The characters are relatable and there is a depth to the story that really makes you think.
- There are Christian analogies that younger children may miss, but older children will get.
- The story is not too mature for young children, yet entertaining for children and adults alike.
Songs of the Children series by LaKaysha Elizabeth. Disclosure: LaKaysha is my niece. 🙂 She is a homeschool graduate and I happily purchased all 3 books in this series. They are Christian historical romance books that will best capture the interest of young adults. The main characters are from (mostly) Eastern Oregon. Though the series is fiction, she draws some of the content/characters from her family’s background and extended families (which includes mine) – so that is fun! The series starts right before WW2 and then continues throughout that time period. My older children enjoyed this series. 🙂
- Real-life events are featured, such as death, sorrow, and hardships.
- A theme of music and the Gospel is woven throughout – which reminds me of my family the most.:)
The Promised Land series by Hope Auer. A homeschool graduate wrote this series based on biblical times, specifically when the Israelites were in captivity in Egypt, their departure, and their wilderness travel with Moses. They are great “living history” books to read while studying “ancient history”. They are most likely meant for ages 10+, but I read them to all of my children as part of our history lessons when some of them were younger than that. We enjoyed them and my 14-year-old daughter says they are her favorite books ever.
- While real biblical persons are mentioned, the main characters are fictional.
- It is a historically accurate storyline with fictional details to fill in the gaps.
Emily’s Christmas by K.E. Faulkner is a short chapter book for children 7+. I read this out loud to my children and we all enjoyed it. It is a sweet story that shares a Christian message of hope at Christmastime.

They feature homeschooling, homesteading, and natural living and include simple recipes!
We’ve been going through the Greetings From Somewhere series by Harper Paris. Not a Christian series, but about 7-yr. old homeschooled twins who travel the world with their parents solving mysteries. Beginning chapter books, loved by an older struggling reader.
