What is homemaking to you?

What do you mean when you call yourself a Homemaker?

The word homemaking may mean different things to different people. But, if you break it down, it simply means “making a home”. 

It doesn’t mean: that decorating with the latest trends, buying the newest furniture, keeping the tidiest house, wearing a fancy dress, heels, makeup, and jewelry while baking a perfect pie, or your home, children, and food are Pinterest-worthy at any given time.

It means so much more than all of that. In Biblical terms, it means being a Keeper at Home – or, to keep our homes.

³ The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;

⁴ That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

⁵ To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. Titus 2:3-5

Keeper, noun One who keeps; one that holds or has possession of any thing. One who has the care, custody or superintendence of any thing. [American Dictionary of the English Language, Noah Webster, 1828]

Perhaps, like me, you often need to be reminded of your purpose as a Homemaker. Studying scripture and the meaning of words is a powerful reminder of what it all means!

Guess what!?! It doesn’t take special skills or privileges to accomplish what God has called us to as Homemakers.

I believe all women can be Homemakers. It just takes a teachable spirit, putting our trust in the Lord, and letting Him lead us!

So, what is homemaking? What does it mean to ‘make a home’?

To me, making a home means providing a comfortable place for my husband to come home to after a long day of working out in the harsh world.

It means:

• cultivating a meaningful life at home.
• making a peaceful place in a world full of chaos.
• providing a safe place for my children to live and learn.
• keeping a clean house, though not perfectly tidy.
• giving my children a place of comfort and joy.
• allowing messes and imaginative play.
• my house looks lived in, yet cared for.
• providing wholesome and nourishing food for my family, though not often gourmet or creative.

It means:

• being frugal and saving money where and whenever I can; groceries, household cleaners, etc.
• managing my home well.
• being available to care for the needs of those within my home.
• trying my hand at being a DIYer.
• believing my current work is meaningful and purposeful.
• taking my job as a homemaker seriously.
• guarding our homes against spiritual, emotional, or physical danger.
• embracing the role God has called me to fulfill in this season of my life.

It means making a home out of a house, breathing life into a mere structure, and praising God for His blessings and grace through it all!
