I don’t think of myself as an artist, per se. However, I have learned that I am an artist in a way since writing is an art and it is one thing I love doing.
I am practical, analytical, and factual, but I am not strong in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, math). My oldest definitely tends to be more of a STEM child.
Hence, we have an artist raising a STEM child. And, not only raising him but teaching him, too!

Raising A STEM Child When You’re An Artist
How can I homeschool my STEM child when I am an artist? Doesn’t that mean that I will be incapable of teaching him all that he needs to know? Won’t I hold him back from his full potential?
- The same way anyone homeschools their child.
- I will utilize resources like other teachers.
- The beauty of homeschooling is that my son is free to pursue his dreams with the extra time he has.
As homeschoolers, we are choosing the path less followed. We are embarking on a journey of dedicating our daytime hours to teaching and mentoring our children in academics – in addition to regular parenting in the mornings and evenings. It is a big commitment, and we do not take it lightly.
As with most homeschool moms, we research and choose resources (curriculum, etc.) that best fit our children, our family, and our child’s future dreams & goals. I am thankful that they are so many great tools and resources available to teach our children, even if we are not strong ourselves in a certain subject.
I have always made STEM resources available for my oldest from the time he was young. He has various science textbooks that he literally spends hours reading and is constantly referencing them to explain concepts to my husband and me. He has access to tech gadgets for exploration and study.
Of course, Lego and other building kits are our favorite “toys” at our house. He loves figuring out difficult math problems, especially when they are from real life.
My son is my go-to STEM guru. My weakness in that area has not held him back at all and in fact, probably has been part of why he has advanced so quickly in those areas.
He loves sharing his STEM-related discoveries with me (and anyone who will listen), he loves problem-solving, and he has become my teacher in science, technology, engineering, and math!
He has a passion for STEM and has naturally headed in that direction with his studies. He amazes me!
So, how to raise a STEM child when you’re an artist is quite simple. Once the educational foundation is solid (reading), everything else almost falls into place.
Provide them with the necessary resources, tools, curriculum, mentors, and opportunities to develop their love for STEM and expand their skills. Then watch them grow!
