Using Bob Ross For Homeschool Art is my latest best idea. I have always enjoyed watching Bob Ross paint and I decided to “hire” him to teach my children to paint because I am not an artist myself.
I think this will work best with children about ten or older, although, my 9-year-old son did quite well with his very first painting session with Bob Ross (see above picture). You know your child best, so you know if they are ready for these art lessons.
I will disclose that before rounding up the supplies for these painting lessons, I provided my children with a couple of other art programs (listed below). I think that they all complement each other and work with various ages and art mediums.

Using Bob Ross For Homeschool Art
The most important part of Using Bob Ross For Homeschool Art is buying his set of instructional DVDs. You may also find them online through a streaming service, but we do not use streaming services so having the DVDs works best for us.

- Bob Ross: The Joy of Painting – Nine 1-hour Instructional Guides DVD set. This guy is such a calm, encouraging teacher!
- Art Supply Painting Set. We bought these, which worked well enough for the first lesson, but some of the paint was dried out and unusable and it does not include some key supplies that Bob mentions for the lessons. My children made do without the liquid white, knife, fan brush, and brush cleaner, but I would recommend the Bob Ross set so that you can actually utilize every technique that he teaches. We plan to buy those items ASAP.
- Extra canvases. Once they get going, they will want to paint whenever the inspiration strikes!
- Advanced Bob Ross Painting Supplies. You can find more items that he mentions throughout the instructional DVDs to help your child develop their art skills.
- Bob Ross books. In the DVDs, he talks about his books that also give step-by-step instructions and information to help the student.
How To Use Bob Ross To Teach Homeschool Art
It is simple! Set your children up at the table with their art supplies and start the DVD for them to watch.
- Put down a big piece of parchment paper, tin, foil, or a towel to protect your table.
- Have your children wear an old, oversized t-shirt to protect their good clothes.
Using Bob Ross For Homeschool Art has been one of the best ideas I have ever had. My husband followed along and discovered the reason why I have always begged him to watch Bob Ross with me.
I believe that the DVDs are intended for adult students, but I have found that they work well for children, too. Whether you “hire” Bob to teach yourself or your children, I think you will be impressed by his ability to teach and your ability to paint beautiful scenes from nature!

Yes, my whole family loooovvveeess Bob Ross. My youngest was 7-8 (3-4 years ago) when she went crazy over everything Bob Ross. We even had a Bob Ross birthday party with the wig and beard costume everything. She wants to paint like him. I have used him for her art but we bought the single dvd. That is a great idea! We have acrylic, but not oil.
I have used a local art studio and also purchased a homeschool subscription to http://www.creatingamasterpiece.com. It is nice because there are lots of ways to sort by type of art you want to do… oil, water color, markers, pencils, carving, print making…by ability level and theme I just signed up for a second year. Lots of choices for my three kids. I also am looking into drawing nature from our yard.
