FishFlix – Exploring Ephesus – City of Apostles Review

History, Biblical Times, and traveling to far off places via Documentaries are all things our family enjoys and we were more than happy to review Exploring Ephesus – City Of Apostles from FishFlix.com.

Apostle Paul of the New Testament is probably my favorite writer of all time. His words – guided and given by God – have lifted me from despair, encouraged, convicted, changed, inspired, and reassured me many times over throughout my life as a Christian.

The Book of Acts records his years of travel after he became a believer in Jesus Christ and spent the rest of his life spreading the Gospel message. He established many churches throughout the great biblical regions and in the midst of pagan cultures. He, along with other Apostles, traveled to and from several great cities and the Christian churches, visiting with and encouraging the new believers.

The church in Ephesus was one such church established by Paul and the Book of Ephesians was written to the church there. This great city is the central focus of the documentary Exploring Ephesus – City of Apostles. However, this documentary does not only explore the ancient city of Ephesus, but also other areas of Turkey, the Isle of Patmos where Jesus Himself delivered a message, and other cities of the biblical region. We are brought along with the documentary hosts to see the roads that Jesus – and later the Apostles – walked on, the city streets they traveled through, even some of the homes and caves they resided in.

The two hosts are engaging and sincere. Both Dr. Andrew Jackson and Dr. Mark Wilson are great at illustrating the events that unfolded during the Apostles’ missionary work. They discuss the timeline in which the events took place, as they walk on the same paths as the Apostles. They bring to life the realities the Apostles faced during their travels. The persecution, the trials, the physical and environmental elements they faced, as well the overall life of the early Christians who grew in faith and strength despite the hardships.

One of the best parts of the film, was when they showed us a painting of Apostle Paul on a cave wall! We are also shown the ancient ruins of pagan temples dedicated to gods, while the hosts discuss the kinds of pagan cultures the Apostles faced during their mission to spread the Gospel of Jesus. I was amazed at the huge structures that are still standing, such as archways into the cities. Another very interesting part of the film is when we are brought to the cave/church where John received his revelation and then later we are brought to the tomb of St. John!The bonus features include a discussion between Dr. Andrew Jackson and Dr. Mark Wilson about the state of today’s church in America and all over the world. I found this 60-minute documentary film and it’s bonus features to be a great addition to our homeschool library!
