Devotional Biology Homeschool Class from Compass Classroom is a course for high school students that teaches biology from a creation worldview. This is a great biology curriculum that fits our family’s teaching methods and core values.
As a “young-earth creation science” believing family, we love finding new resources for teaching our children these truths. I think it is so important to teach science from a Christian worldview because, contrary to secular teachings, Christianity and science are not in contradiction to each other.
“Science was born in Christianity … because only in a Christian worldview can we believe the things about the universe that make science make sense.” – Dr. Wise
First published in 2017, this article was updated in 2022 after my oldest son completed the course.
Devotional Biology Homeschool Class
This is an in-depth biology course. It is an excellent option for a high school biology class and also for adults interested in Creation Science.
While this is a very thorough science course, it is more than that. It is a way to see God through His creation.
I am not downplaying the fact that this is a very high-quality and thorough biology course, but I want to focus on the fact that this course is a solid ‘argument’ in favor of Christian-based science. If you are a Bible believer, this is the biology course for you.
In most secular biology programs, you start with the tiny organisms and continue from there with an evolutionary view of life. In this course, we start with the Creator of the organisms. We are made to know God (the source of life) while learning all about biology! It is firmly rooted in Scripture, God’s Word is woven throughout the course, and this is very much a course for Christians.
It was developed and is taught by a man who has this resume:
“Dr. Wise earned his BA in geology from the University of Chicago and his MA and PhD degrees in paleontology from Harvard University. He founded and directed the Center for Origins Research at Bryan College and taught biology there for 17 years. He then led the Center for Theology and Science at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary for 3 years, before founding and directing the Center for Creation Research and teaching biology at Truett McConnell University for the last 7 years. His fieldwork has included research in early Flood rocks in the Death Valley region, late Flood rocks in Wyoming, and post-Flood caves in Tennessee.” – [source]
He was taught science from a secular worldview, but as a Christian, he went on to teach biology based on biblical truths. I love how God uses all things (like secular teachings & research) for our good and His glory!
Through this amazing biology course, we learn that life does have a purpose. And that purpose is reaffirmed over and over again throughout this course.
I am super impressed with Dr. Wise and his Devotional Biology Video Course. I am enjoying working through this course myself, and my children will use this for 9th-grade science.
Brief Personal Review
My oldest completed this course in 9th grade, and I think it was just the right amount of content for him. The content went deep enough to challenge him, but did not go too deep into topics that a teen may not be ready for yet, which I appreciated very much. Now that my son is in his final year of high school, he says it was his favorite science course from high school!

Clarissa, have you had a chance to complete any more of the Devotional Biology course? We are considering it for our kids for high school, and I can’t find many reviews on it. We tried Apologia Biology, but the enormous amounts of vocabulary in each chapter really made my daughter struggle. I am curious to see if you’d ever looked at Apologia Biology and could compare the two, or if not, what you think about the difficulty of this course in general. Thank you!
Yes, my oldest son completed this course for his 9th-grade science. I think the video lessons with Devotional Biology offer a great way to learn from an expert and may be helpful for both the teacher/student to better understand the concepts being taught. We plan to have all of our children use this for their high school biology!
Hi,
What are your thoughts on just using the videos as part of a high school biology course? Or do you think the textbook is really needed to go along with the videos?
Thanks!
I think the videos are super informative and you could go the route of using them without the textbook, but it depends on what you want to record on the high school transcripts and how you want to document credits for college.
OK, awesome! Thanks so much!
Does this course include any dissections?
We didn’t get the lab materials so we did not do any dissections. I am not sure if that is included in the lab materials kit.
