Picking up the cross – daily – as a homeschool mama is an important part of family discipleship. In fact, it is some of the most important work you can do even though it doesn’t always feel that way.
We pretty much devote our lives to raising our children.
We…
- homeschool
- read the Bible every day
- have Sunday worship together
- discuss sin
- offer forgiveness and grace
- discipline
- sing hymns
- love
- pray like crazy
- discuss the events in mainstream media and our world today
- address them from a biblical perspective and encourage questions
- keep a straight face and hide the embarrassment when sensitive subjects come up at the oddest of times because we know there is no time like the present to talk about those things
- are quite open and straightforward with our kids
- warn them of the devil, the world, and their own flesh
- desire to teach them and train them up in the way that God calls us to in His word
- strive to do crafts and projects and field trips and make amazing memories with our kids
- want the very best education for them
- want them to be all that they dream to be

And, every day we feel like we failed.
We…
- say things we shouldn’t
- yell
- let them watch more Netflix than is healthy
- let them eat too many sweets
- forget to show them just how much we love them (even though we love them more than we thought possible)
- make mediocre meals
- lack in the creative (fun) department
- didn’t play that game
- didn’t read that book
It was all we could do to survive, to not have a total meltdown (again).

Dear homeschool mama…
Jesus meets us there in the dark.
It is in us picking up this cross to follow Jesus that we are in turn raising disciples who take up their cross and follow Jesus – no matter the cost. In a world where biblical truths are rapidly declining, our children need us to lead them by example.
So, I encourage you Homeschool Mama, to continue putting forth the effort. Be intentional with your time with your children, for it is fleeting.
It is in the small moments and humble confessions and hugs and tears and whispers of “will you forgive me?” that our children see what living for Jesus is all about. It is in daily Bible reading and embracing biblical truths that they see us do what really matters.
Dear Homeschool Mama,
Yes, I know it is a heavy cross to bear, the raising up and discipling of your children, but Homeschool Mama, you have God on your side! Now, more than ever, it is important to take your calling seriously and believe in the importance of that calling.
After all, a Mother has more influence on her children than she may realize – a Christian homeschool mama is picking up the cross and partaking in family discipleship daily by default. Just think about your own Mother and how she influenced you, whether for good or for bad – her life breathed life into you and then helped mold you into who you are.
Someday, it will be your children who have grown up, and what is the most important thing you would want them to remember about you? For me, I pray that they could say what I can say about my Mother: “Jesus lived in her, and through her life, I saw Him”.
But, they will remember.
Furthermore, when they are grown up and look back at their childhood, they will not see many individual moments. Instead, they will see an accumulated lifetime of a mother always there, always listening, always striving to do what was best, and most importantly a mother being honest about her shortcomings and always pointing them back to Jesus… no matter the cost.
So, dear homeschool mama, do not forget that picking up the cross and homeschooling your children is a huge part of family discipleship. You are leaving a legacy and you are doing God’s work!

And, I think your words are right on today. My kids are both in college now, and I see and hear the challenges that they face.

I was feeling very discouraged, angry, and hurt with how close relatives reacted to my husband and I’ decision to homeschool. And I was scrolling through Pinterest I saw this post. I just wanted to say thank you for writing this. Your words have really aided my hurting. Thankfully, I am surrounded by older Christian women who homeschool and have been nothing but supportive. Isn’t it amazing how God puts us right where we need to be?

This is exactly right. I have been mothering kids for 37 years (foster/adopt). I am finally learning to give myself grace. It is a relief from what you describe.
