Solomons Wisdom
When we read from Proverbs one thing I see repeated over and over again, is the fact that sin has consequence. Not just in the sense that we will get in “trouble”, but in the surprisingly obvious declaration that sin HURTS us.
Whether physical, mental, or spiritual… sin does us harm! God does not just make something a sin out of thin air!
He doesn’t randomly decide that something should be a sin with no good reason! He doesn’t warn us and rebuke us and guide us away from sin just for “fun” (or, as some believe, to take away our fun!)…
He does it because He is a loving Father desiring to protect and care for His children! He does it, because He truly does know what is best for us!
God is a God of order. He created human bodies and designed them to work a certain way. He created the universe and the earth and everything on it and ordered it to work a certain way.
He set the sun in the sky and set it in motion, rising and setting. He designed the ocean and the clouds and the rain and the wind to all work together for the good of the earth… for us.
He knows how disease and our immune systems work. He knows how we can be harmed by things we put into our bodies or on our bodies or things that we do with our bodies.
Yes, there will be disease and sickness and suffering and death regardless of our choices (because of sin entering the world), but there will also be consequences from our own personal sins.
Just like a mama or daddy who gives rules and restrictions for their children, TO PROTECT THEM, so does God our Father! We teach our baby/child to not touch the hot oven or run out into the road, to not lie or sass or be disrespectful, and we teach them self-control in all areas, etc.We know our own children and love them much more than anyone else ever could, and the same goes for God and us… His children!
God wants to keep us close to Him… and living in sin will separate us from Him. He wants us to glorify and point others to Jesus so that they may also know Him… and living in sin will not do that.

“Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law. For I was my father’s son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live. Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee. Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many. I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble. Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life. Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.” Proverbs 4:1-15
We can not obey Him or do anything for Him through any power of our own and we will fail and sin (we ARE sin)… but the Bible clearly teaches us that God wants us to try and live according to His Holy Word, even though we will fail! Because in our weakness He is made strong and through our failures He is glorified.
The fact that we are sin and that we will fail, does not excuse us from striving to live for Him! It grieves me deeply when others feel that doing what is right or to strive to live according to the Holy Bible, is considered somehow wrong because it means that we are “under the law” or “legalistic” or that we are trying to work for our salvation!
NO, obeying God is not for any of those reasons… it is simply because that is what HE tells us to do in His Word!
Solomon speaks very boldly and bluntly to us in Proverbs about the snare of sin, the pain and disease and sorrow that will come from sin, and most importantly about the spiritual death that can come from a life of embracing sin and denying Christ!
We need to take seriously the words from the wisest man to ever live!
