The unopened sack of organic white whole wheat flour sits in the pantry. I cringe every time I see it. It is a shameful reminder that I should be baking homemade bread for my kids instead of picking up cheap whole-wheat bread from the store. I should be a better mom.

I hurry into the garage where our washing machine is. I quickly toss in some clothes from the overflowing clothes hamper and grab the bottle of store-bought allergy-friendly detergent (I use this kind, btw). The empty gallon glass jar sits on the shelf, mocking me. I still haven’t gotten a batch of homemade detergent made! I am failing as a homemaker.

Sound familiar? Substitute the homemade bread with a home-cooked meal. Change the homemade laundry detergent to folded clothes. Whatever it is, we’ve all been there. We want to do it all for our family. But, you don’t have to do it all.

Moms and homemakers set high standards and put a lot of pressure on themselves. Every day we are in charge of young souls and the homes they occupy. It can be overwhelming, to say the least.

Dear Mama, You Don’t Have To Do It All!

But, when life is filled with small children needing mom to read to them or hug them in her spare minutes of the day between diaper changes, a fussy baby, meal prep, supervising their education, and keeping clean clothes and dishes available: there is little time left to bake bread from scratch, all of the time.

Reading the Bible to them, spending time with them living life … those are the important moments with your children.

And, the fifteen minutes it takes to make a batch of all-natural laundry detergent may not seem like much, but when you have to choose between a shower and homemade detergent, it’s okay to choose a shower! Your husband will thank you!

A shoulder rub and a few kind words for your husband when he gets home after a long day at work … those are the important moments with him.

As a wife, mama, and homemaker, we go through seasons. Sometimes we have time for making everything from scratch, keeping up with the laundry, and staying on top of the latest health-food trends … and sometimes we don’t. That’s really okay!

Sure, keep them on your to-do list, but don’t stress when you haven’t crossed them off at the end of the day. Don’t feel guilty when you are grabbing another loaf of bread or a bottle of laundry detergent from the store!

Instead, remember how your kids laughed when you took the time to read them a story in a silly voice and how your husband appreciated the effort it took to get dressed for the day and make time for a date night.

In the end, it is the moments with our husband and kids that matter.
