I am sharing How Typing Improves Creative Writing, based on my family’s experience. I have several children, and I have been homeschooling since 2010, when my oldest child turned five.
Teaching handwriting was difficult with each of my children. Once they learned to form letters, they still struggled to write fluently for several years.

They were creative children, and they loved to make up stories together, but writing them down on paper was not going to happen. I knew they could write letters and words, so I wondered why putting more than a few sentences on paper was so hard for them.
I thought they didn’t want to complete their creative writing lessons. But I realized that they were getting overwhelmed by the mechanics of handwriting, and skipping school lessons wasn’t their intention.

How Typing Improves Creative Writing in Homeschool
I decided to let them type their stories, using the computer – I still required writing by hand for most of their school lessons, but I let them type when writing creatively. This was a game-changer!
I believe that typing fluently is so important in our age of technology. I want my children to have the ability to compete in their future careers, whether it is writing online (as I do) or working in an office (as my husband does as part of his job in a construction company).
Every business benefits from a fast typist in some capacity, but even a homemaker needs to know how to type. I have used the computer to type things for our personal life that have nothing to do with business.
Once I removed the stumbling block of physically writing by hand, they were on a roll! Well, a couple of my children were, but some couldn’t catch on to typing on their own – I needed a typing program to teach them how to type!
When I was little, we had a fun typing game that I loved. I wanted something similar for my children.

KidzType is exactly what I was looking for!
What’s even better about KidzType is that it is a FREE program for everyone! There are ADs on their website to help them keep their services free for users, but so far, none have been inappropriate for children.
I have been quite impressed with their offerings. They have a wide variety of ways for children ages 5-12 (and older, IMO) to learn how to type.
Typing improves creative writing in our homeschool, so this typing program helps me teach creative writing! Win-win!
My boys have been “reluctant writers”, but as they learn to type, they are learning to put their thoughts down on paper (so to speak) in a way that does not interfere with their imaginations like the mechanics of writing by hand, or pecking at a keyboard, often does. Typing is something everyone should learn.
Use KidzType for free! They have:
- games
- lessons
- exercises
- practices
- finger chart
- typing test
My children have had a blast playing the typing games. Each game is different, but all teach typing, from beginner to more advanced.
My kids have been enjoying the games with racing (several styles to choose from), space, ninja, farm animals, etc. I think that as soon as a child can recognize their letters, they can start learning to type using this program – even my 17-year-old has been playing the games!
Please note: I saw a couple of games that might include content we try to avoid, such as vampires and mermaids, but I am not sure what they contain since we didn’t click on them. They are all cartoon-style, and there is nothing “bad” to see.
I believe KidzType helps children by improving:
- spelling
- fine motor skills
- computer skills
- and helps them enjoy learning something new
