During all of the “pandemic” stuff and stay-at-home orders, etc. of 2020 and beyond, the main thing that changed for my family was getting to have my husband home from work for a couple of months. Nothing else changed because we have been practicing social distancing/self-isolation for over ten years already.
Of course, we are not completely distanced or isolated from society in general. But, we do stay home more often than not and my husband is the only one who regularly leaves our house/property daily.
For the first time in 17+ years of parenting special needs/medically fragile/disabled children, I feel like a lot more people understand why we transitioned to a stay-at-home life for the sake of our children’s health. I guess that is one blessing that has come from this worldwide crisis – more understanding for the medically fragile.
However, I do feel I have a unique opinion compared to what the media portrays in regards to the “vulnerable” community and the responsibility of others to protect them – or, what that looks like in reality.

I have learned that for people with healthy immune systems (like my husband’s), it is GOOD for them to be out in the world/public and even to catch most viruses, etc. But, people with weakened/compromised immune systems (lacking the ability to build immunity at all), must protect themselves (or be protected by their caregivers).
I have learned – not just recently, but in the last 17+ years – that it is OUR (mine, my husband’s) responsibility to protect and raise our children. It has not (ever) been the responsibility of the governing powers, church leaders, or even our extended families to protect our children, to change their lifestyle, or to force the public at large to change their lifestyle to protect MY children.
Society, as a whole, should protect the most vulnerable in practical ways (in moments of interacting with them in person), but the sick/weak/immunocompromised should be the ones at home being cared for by other, healthy people who CAN go out into public and expose themselves to viruses, fight them (build antibodies) with their healthy immune systems, build immunity to them, and weaken the virus before it reaches the vulnerable at home.
I KNOW I am not a medical expert, but sometimes being the one LIVING in the trenches of reality, learning through real life, and experiencing it all for yourself gives you a unique perspective … EVEN over those who have been in the medical labs, clinics, or what have you.
In conclusion – I can’t claim to know how YOU should respond or react to a medical crisis, or other life circumstances … that’s why I am thankful for – and hope to keep – the right and responsibility of making choices for myself and my children – the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
It is also interesting to note that our (USA) country’s constitution was written on biblical principles and for moral/religious people who practice personal responsibility – and it will fail otherwise. It requires a moral compass, a biblical understanding, and respect for God’s law (as truth) before it will make sense to them. [read more on personal responsibility]
