Do you need resources to Teach Your Children About Slavery? I have some recommendations for you! The newest books by Danika Cooley in the Who What Why series of Christian biographies for children address slavery in a way that is great for teaching young children while being informative and interesting for older children (and adults)!
Teach Your Children About Slavery Using These Books
There are three books in this series that are related to slavery.
Who Were The Abolitionists?
Who Were the Abolitionists? (Who, What, Why)
What Was The Underground Railroad?
What Was the Underground Railroad? (Who, What, Why)
Why Did Slavery End?
Why Did Slavery End? (Who, What, Why)
You should get them all and use them as a source of teaching about this important historical event from a Christian perspective. I thoroughly enjoyed reading these true depictions of history to my children.
- They are written in straightforward language that gives enough information to children without overwhelming them.
- They share about people who did what was right no matter what.
- Just really honest and to the point. I appreciate down-to-earth conversations and reading these felt like I was having one with the author. No fluff.
- The good, the bad, and the ugly of the time period are discussed in an appropriate manner (spoiler alert, the “good” in the equation are the Gospel, God’s love for mankind, and the people who fought on the side of Biblical Truth against slavery!).
- They express why and how to love all humans with dignity and respect as image-bearers of God.
- I really appreciate the Church history shared throughout alongside the secular history.
- The timelines really put it all in perspective.
- I love the Biblical Truths explained so plainly – both in regard to slavery AND salvation!
I am excited to buy and read the other books in this series, like the following:
Who Was Martin Luther?
What Was The Gutenberg Bible?
Why Did The Reformation Happen?
