Homeschool High School For A Girl looks different than the curriculum and resources we chose for our boy. My daughter’s interests include writing, reading, animals (dogs, goats, and horses right now), and homemaking skills such as caring for babies, cooking, baking, and handicrafts.

I thoroughly enjoy seeing my children’s personal goals emerge as they enter high school, and I like helping them choose the best courses of study to pursue. We are flexible and will adjust as needed over the next four years, but this is what we have outlined to start with.

Homeschool High School For A Girl

Math – MasterBooks’ Principles of Mathematics book 1. She was doing Teaching Textbooks for grade 8, but we chose not to continue it for 9th grade because it wasn’t a good fit for her. We are using PoM1 to reinforce previously learned math to go forward on a firmer foundation. She learns better from reading and applying math in a relatable way. PoM1 seems to be working for her. We prefer Applied Math over Academic/Pure Math. We plan to continue with PoM2 and then re-evaluate from there. Math skills for personal finance, household management (Home Economics, ranging from baking to budgeting), and business are our focus. The Uncle Eric books, Beyond Numbers, Understanding Mathematics: From Counting to Calculus, and other books are also on hand for reference.

Language Arts – Compass Classroom’s Grammar for Writers. She is a writer, so this is a great course for her. It is challenging, but she is taking it as slowly as needed to absorb the information. We have always taken a gentle approach to grammar and have not used diagramming – and Grammar for Writers does, so it is a new concept for her. I am okay with this course taking her two years to complete, since it is very thorough and high-level. She is also working her way through the Creative Writing course from Compass Classroom for high school. She is an avid reader and writer, so these are great guides as she embraces a lifestyle of learning language arts. Once she completes these courses, her focus will most likely be on reading and writing great books while using any other resources and tools she finds necessary in the process. This is the beauty of home education: it teaches students to love learning about what interests them.

Uncle Eric Series Beyond Numbers: A Practical Guide to Teaching Math Biblically Understanding Mathematics: From Counting to Calculus Abacus Country Wisdom & Know-How Children’s Illustrated Thesaurus

History (+Social Studies/Geography/Cultural Studies) – We started out planning to use American History from MasterBooks, but we switched to HorseStory vol. 1 & 2 by Vicki Watson. My daughter loves horses, and this curriculum takes you on a journey through history from the 1400s forward with a focus on the role horses played throughout time. It is mostly American history, so it is a great alternative to the course we had planned. Since she has 4 years to cover American and World history, she has plenty of time to study through the HorseStory courses and the American/World History courses from MasterBooks to fill any gaps. This is the first time she has been “assigned” a textbook for history since we have always learned it through reading the history/social/geography/cultural studies books recommended by Tapestry of Grace, which she is still doing. She is also reading other great books like the Sonrise Stable series and the classics from Generations.

Science – Compass Classroom’s Devotional Biology. This is an excellent biology course that first looks at Christian theology as found in the Bible, then applies that to living organisms and what that means to how humans live. It touches on some mature topics but isn’t explicit in any way. The best part about this course is its focus on God’s Word and Biblical Truths. It honors and respects all life (animals and humans) while bringing glory to God. It is very life-giving and interesting, which starts the student on the path of desiring to learn more about God’s creation. We appreciate this course. This is one course my eldest son took that my daughter also wanted to take in high school. She is very interested in animals, so future courses will probably go even deeper into animal biology. She already studies every book she can get her hands on about animals and hopes to train horses and/or dogs one day. She also reads about how to care for our goats. Since we are homesteaders, we are learning about plant life through gardening, caring for the soil, etc., and that is something she is doing alongside us. A future science course for her may be Survey of Science History & Concepts from MasterBooks to cover all science basics, in addition to more biology courses.

Health/P.E. – Trim Healthy You from Trim Healthy Mama. This is a great nutrition/health/P.E. course taught from a Biblical perspective.

Other – She reads the Bible, plays the piano, sings, draws, and creates all kinds of stuff for a very well-rounded “fine arts class”.

Homeschool High School For A Girl is tailored to my daughter’s learning style and interests. She loves writing, spending time with our animals, reading wholesome books, helping care for her youngest brother (who is disabled and terminally ill), and learning to cook and bake for her family – but, above all, she loves the Lord and desires to serve Him in all she does.
