Journaling for busy moms may seem like just another thing to add to an already too-full list. I feel that way often, yet have loved journaling all of my life.
As a super busy mom of 7 young children, whom I also homeschool, finding time to journal in any capacity has been difficult.
Where I used to just flop down on my bed every evening, open my notebook, and fill three or four pages without a second thought, I am now so mentally exhausted that I can’t even think of where to begin! I open a notebook and just stare at the blank pages and end up jotting down only a sentence or two.

Bible Journaling For Busy Moms
I have found that combining my Bible study with journaling helps since I have a purpose to my journaling already established. I can read a passage, look up a word definition (for my biblical word study portion of it), jot down my thoughts, etc.
In just several minutes I have done some meaningful journaling, learned something new (hopefully), sought the Lord, and spent a little time doing something I enjoy. It is a mental and physical outlet I think everyone should pursue since it literally takes as little as 15-minutes.
The good thing about journaling in this way is that you can squeeze in fifteen minutes almost anywhere in your day — even while using the bathroom, feeding the baby, or ??? if necessary (hey, I honestly know what it’s like to be a SUPER busy mom) AND if you find that you have more time available, you can dive deeper into the journaling.
The really awesome thing about journaling for Bible study is that in addition to being a creative outlet or “me time” you are potentially growing closer to the Lord. It serves a purpose.

Busy moms know that doing something “just for fun” is not a concept that is easily (and guiltlessly) embraced. We are always “on duty” and so taking up a hobby or something that doesn’t count as purposeful/meaningful is often hard.
Bible journaling is a perfect “hobby” for moms because Bible study/time is SO important in a Christian’s life. Making time for it is vital.
Since writing in a blank notebook, creating a bullet journal, or pulling creativity from thin air is sometimes more than an already-exhausted-mom can manage, using journals with prompts and guidance is my secret tip to daily Bible journaling!
How To Start Journaling As A Busy Mom
- Use A Prompt Journal. Find a journal with prompts, instructions, or art lessons included.
- Just Start! When I first started using a journal with prompts and guides, I felt like the pages were too beautiful for my sloppy handwriting and amateur drawings, so I didn’t dare to “mess it up”. Then I finally just started and realized that it was fun and relaxing, no matter what it looked like. It is meant to be used.
- Write To Someone. Whether you journal, write, and draw for the Lord in prayer & praise, or have someone else in mind like your children, husband, mom, or a “younger you”… it helps to think of it as a letter, keepsake, or record.
- Dedicate Just A Few Minutes. Setting aside just a few minutes per day to work on one page will be the best place to start, As you make it a habit and learn to enjoy it, you can increase the time if you want to.
- Don’t Give Up! It might take a while before you feel like journaling is worth it, but don’t give up. If it feels boring, then revisit why you want to create a habit of journaling (for Bible study, relaxing, growing, etc.). Are your reasons worth the effort?
