I see mainstream media trying to redefine words to fit their narrative, which is unsettling. In a world full of confusion and chaos, we must cling tight to truth, Biblical Truth.

We’ve all heard the mantra “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me!” and I know the intent behind that phrase is good. It is a good habit to let words of ill intent slide off our backs and not consume us or negatively influence us.

On the other hand, we better also be sure we are not the ones who are being careless with our words! Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. Ephesians 4:29

God has a lot to say about words and how we use them. So, while it is true that we should not be easily offended by the words of others, we need to be sure we are not using our words inappropriately. Our words, as well as our actions, are a witness to others – may they be wholesome.

Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones. Proverbs 16:24

Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. Colossians 4:5-6

Let’s meditate on wholesome words via a short biblical word study today. The King James version of the Holy Bible and the American Dictionary of the English Language by Noah Webster, 1828, are used.

³If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;

⁴He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,

⁵Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

Definitions to Consider

WHOLESOME, adjective

Tending to promote health; favoring health; salubrious; as wholesome air or diet; a wholesome climate.
Sound; contributing to the health of the mind; favorable to morals, religion, or prosperity; as wholesome advice; wholesome doctrines; wholesome truths.
Useful; salutary; conducive to public happiness, virtue, or peace; as a wholesome law.
That utters sound words. A wholesome tongue is a tree of life.
Kindly; pleasing; as a wholesome answer.

WORD, noun

To speak. A word is that which is uttered or thrown out.
The Scripture; divine revelation, or any part of it. This is called the word of God.

Friend, this is the why behind writing my biblical word studies. I want to focus on wholesome words … God’s Word … and study to know the meaning of them.

I want to be sure I am using words correctly, understanding their true meanings, and being intentional with my speech. I want to RESPOND with thoughtfulness rather than REACT with emotion.
